I compiled everything under a different desktop. Started E. the startup
sound was fine and it all looked fine. But many non-E applications throw an
error box saying that it could not fork a child process.

Nothing internet-related -- ProtonVPN, any browser -- works. LibreOffice
starts up, but GIMP doesn't.

Also, is there a command that will rescan to find applications to populate
the menu? It seems to have missed a few, such as ProtonMail.

The second question is a matter of convenience, while the former is
seemingly serious.

~/.xsession-errors is unhelpful. It offers nothing that I can attribute to
E.

Fwiw, I'm running a Nvidia card, 1030, and Wayland is not disabled though
I'm not using it.
