I am sorry I can't help you a lot . I have tried to find on the web about freebsd and the propiarity nvidia driver 390 . Some people say to use the driver 340 instead when the card is very old.
My question about the mesa version was because when I upgraded mesa to version 21.3.7 I got guru error with an intel gpu, I was obliged to configure the compositor to software acceleration to have a working system. The solution was to upgrade to 22.2.0. mesa 21.3.x is the mesa-amber version with the old dri drivers (nouveau is included in) mesa 22.2.x is the last mesa version with the new gallium drives with also nouveau , there are no more dri drivers. Normally you must have some informations about the failure in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and in $USER/.e-log.log Best regards Daniel .
