wait... you are using ~/.Xresources to set fonts? not expecting E's dialogs to
do it?

emacs is using the font i selected (for testing). ... but this doesnt use
xresources like the above. it uses xsettings to do this. some old old old xt
based stuff will probably not play nicely but emacs seems to be fine in my
screenshot here. gtk2 and gtk3 apps work - you may need to restart them for
settings to apply.
