I have this working with the following own_window* settings:

own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_type normal
own_window_hints undecorate,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

Conky supports true transparency since 1.8.0, with most important line
being 'own_window_transparent yes'. I'm not sure how different settings
interact, but this works for me.

Good luck,

Martin
