I have this working with the following own_window* settings: own_window yes own_window_transparent yes own_window_argb_visual yes own_window_type normal own_window_hints undecorate,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
Conky supports true transparency since 1.8.0, with most important line being 'own_window_transparent yes'. I'm not sure how different settings interact, but this works for me.
