Just a quick follow-up... I ran a naked X session (no window manager,
just an xterm), and this time xev shows there are keycodes detected
when i press the brightness buttons. As expected, they're off by 8
from the terminal's keycodes. And xmodmap shows that these keycodes
are what they're supposed to be:

keycode 232 = XF86MonBrightnessDown NoSymbol XF86MonBrightnessDown
keycode 233 = XF86MonBrightnessUp NoSymbol XF86MonBrightnessUp

So it seems that while E is running, something is intercepting these
keypresses. Any clues?
