I'm old and slow and not a programmer so I wouldn't be much help ;) I tried pulse again a few months ago, and it wouldn't recognize the headphone jack. Maybe that's fixed now. I understood that pulse is just an abstraction layer on top of alsa, so not sure how alsa could go away? I use alsa to try an have as close to bit-perfect source for my external dac and headphones. cd > alsa > external DAC/amp > headphones.
