Yes, that's the way I'm using it.
You need the last version from http://code.google.com/p/tint2
Follow the instructions in wiki to configure it manually:
http://code.google.com/p/tint2/wiki/Configure
The most important line in my config is:
panel_items = S
So only systray item is present on the panel.
