unfortunately there is no way to change volume other than mess with the
original samples. there is an option to mute this in elementary_config tool
(mute input sounds), that's it.

i think ethumbd is not working for you. maybe a dbus service problem - missing
ethumbd dbus service file or noty installed in the right place? configure tells
you to make symlinks if needed etc. on compile...
