For the translation look at the wiki, there's a page that explain how to do, it's REALLY easy. For the photo module I will be happy to help you, should be really straightforward to implement. The only core part that will need some love for that is the grid view (all is just there, just need some small adjustment to look better). Of course photo module must wait the next release cycle.
