I got the email saying it was approved about 4 hours ago, with my request
perhaps an hour before then. I don't know how long it would take, but it could
be that.

On the "Request Access" page they list 4 types of roles:
Observer/User I use this project and/or am interested in learning more about
the quality of this project.
Contributor I contribute (code, documentation, tests and/or ideas) to this
project.
Maintainer/Owner I review code contributions, build source code and/or
am completely responsible for one or more areas within this project.
Other Not sure
It could be that instead of applying as a user I should've applied as a
contributor, and the roles are more about permissions than about labels.
