I apologize for the vague subject line, and no, this isn't about Window
8. I don't know the name of the feature I am looking for. Lets say I
have a maximized window. If I open a smaller window on top of it, that
window immediately sinks beneath it. What is the window setting to turn
that off?

I will admit that a lot of times that feature is in fact very useful,
and I might end up restoring it, but for the time being... An even
better solution would be for the mouse cursor to automatically head
straight for the new open window before it sinks like it does for the
first window below the top most window that gets closed. I am also
curious what the name of that feature is.

Thanks,

William
