I had similar problems before the latest efl and e tarballs, which now work fine. But, before if the mixer stopped working, I would have to unload the mixer module and delete the mixer gadget. Restarted e, add the mixer module and gadget again and it would should the correct card and the mixer would work properly. ymmv. But as I said, with the latest tarball releases I have not had any problems.
