Huh?  If you use the nouveau driver, you still can't get a screen as user?!
Well, that likely rules out any problems with the nvidia driver.

 OK, how about this.  Start X, go to the console, run the xrandr command.
You should have authority to connect to the X server, though you'll probably
need to set the DISPLAY env (i.e export DISPLAY=:0.0).  It'll be interesting
to see what xrandr thinks is the active screen.
