I also encounter it with Skype, occasionally. The frequency seems to increase
with the uptime. It happened several times already, today.

# uptime
 7:34pm  up 4 days, 12:57, 2 users, load averages: 0.69, 0.87, 0.88

I don't need to flip VTs to make it happen. And usually the window that 
currently
has focus still works for me. I just cannot change focus, on account of the WM 
not
reacting.

Valgrind ... never used that before. May give it a try.
