I'd give the opensource radeon driver a chance. I've had no rendering
problems here with composite enabled. Composite used to increase cpu load,
but over the last few months seems much more efficient.
I'm using xf86-video-ati-6.14.4-r1 and mesa-8.0.4-r1.
Depending on the vintage of your card you may find that the card's fan is
running more than with the proprietary driver - the latter has power
management enabled.
