running 12.04 here, and the last time I compiled python bindings (a couple of
weeks ago, or so) I did run "./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/e17" and all was
installed in /opt/e17/lib/python2.7/site-packages.
have you tried forcing prefix=/usr?
