OK so I've pinned down the issue further with the help of SeoZ.

So the PNG image in question is actually a ICO image, when named as a PNG
though it causes current revisions of E to segfault when loaded. This did
not happen with older SVN revisions - they just loaded the "PNG" image
without complaint.

Odd.
