I have identified the issue and have a workaround. The problem seems to 
be connected to the full preemption kernel I was running and wireless 
networking. Installing a standard kernel (same version number) and 
running easy_e17.sh works as expected. On checking the kernel config for 
each kernel the only difference between them is the preemption type and 
timer frequency (250hz -standard, 1000hz on preempt kernel)
