I think this is related to the "Applications unintentionally using an 
ARGB visual" issue mentioned in README-0.16.8.

I see the same behavior you describe, but I don't think anything has 
changed in e16 in this area (checked back to 0.16.8.9 - same thing).
Could it be that you recently updated to an X-server with the composite 
extension enabled?

One way to fix this is to make wrapper scripts that set 
XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=y before starting the application.
