Hi there, i found the problem, when you set the property stacking of a shelf to above everything or below windows the transparency just works if you use a composite manager, to do the tranparency works without the composite you have to use the property stacking below everything, because I think when the shelf is below everything it interacts directly with the background and the transparency now is possible. So, to use transparency without composite, set the property stacking of the shelf to below everything.
