Actually, if you're running Slackware 12.0 with all the patches, you
should be able to run most SlackE17 20080504.
I'm just testing it right now : the wm seems to work as expected, so
the modules and most of apps.
Known problems so far: mpd (so emphasis) because of libFLAC, elitaire
because of libstdc++. Maybe others.

I'm quite surprised it works so well. So you can give it a try if you
really don't plan to upgrade to Slackware 12.1 soon.
But don't expect too much, it was not meant for this.
