Did you have compositing enabled in e16? If not, then it seems to me that the nvidia driver is becoming unstable just by enabling the composite extension. That one is new to me.
I'd still like to know whether it was an e16 problem or a server crash. If it was a server crash there should be some error message/backtrace stuff at the end of Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old.
