Using gconf-editor (as user) I changed the following keys:

/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/current from metatcity to
blank
/desktop/gnome/interface/font_name
to blank
/desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme
to blank
/desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme
to blank
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
un-check

You may not need to use all of them as I'm in 'hit it with a sledgehammer'
mode

**NB I don't use the gnome desktop at all, so I'm not sure if the above will
affect the running of gnome.**

Anyway seems to have cured the problem for me.
