Hi Paul,

AFAIR you can have kde to cooperate by changing startkde, just comment
kwin line and start e instead, it used to work some years ago.

I was a KDE user until moving to e17 some months ago and I still run
some applications, however I'm a developer and use just a handful of
applications, some not even dependent on their systems, like firefox
(with gtk, but without any gnome) and emacs. I do use dolphin (kde3
version), konqueror, kopete, amarok, skype (qt, but not kde) and
yakuake. I don't have to run any special command to have them working,
just sometimes when klaunch/kded dies I restart it manually from
console. Ah, if you want to run things like kwalletmanager so you can
use kde's password manager you have to run it manually for some apps
like kmail, but kopete seems to auto start it.
