although the bling module (which is in CVS though i dont use it) has 
a nice gui and fades windows in and out when you move the mouse over 
them, i find using xcompmgr (with a bunch of options set, like 'xcompmgr 
-fF -cC -r7 -o.65 -l-10 -t-8 -D3' which gives you fades and a good 
shadow radius) and the latest version of GNOME Terminal as the best way 
to get transparency.
    make sure to get the version of xcompmgr from X.org's git 
repositories because AFAIK only that version sets the NET_WM hint that 
allows GNOME terminal to know that a composite manager is running and 
gives you true transparency in the terminal window.  If you dont want to 
go through the bother of getting that I can get you a binary for linux/x86.
