Almost certainly a result of using old out-of-date versions of the
autoconf/automake/libtool etc.

Here on a Ubuntu Dapper system (already over a year old), I'm
running:

    autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
    automake (GNU automake) 1.9.6
    ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.22 Debian 1.5.22-2 (1.1220.2.365 2005/12/18
22:14:06)

Last time I used Solaris (3 years ago) I found the GNU software
SUN shipped on their CDs was hopelessly out of date.
