An alternative to gnome-settings-daemon would be to create .gtkrc-2.0 with
your settings in there.  An example of .gtkrc-2.0 would be:

gtk-icon-theme-name = "Tango"
gtk-theme-name = "Clearlooks"
gtk-font-name = "Bitstream Vera Sans 10"

You would no longer have to run gnome-settings-daemon, so ctrl-alt-l should
bring up the lockscreen of enlightenment.
