That it now works without composite is more a side affect :) 
If you have a composite manager then set enlightenment_remote
-use-composite-set 1. If not then itask-ng uses these ugly shaped
windows which have the problem that one cant define the input area for
them.

Atm you have to disable autohide and turn the bg on when using
without composite. 
 
I'll have a look these things soon. I think one can fix it
with an extra (transparent) window which listens to mouse-in/out events
