This is the same thing why you can't get a transparent eterm. standalone engage transparency works as Andy says. it should also work with e17setroot which is in e_utils. there is also support for real transparency, this can be enabled with the -C 1 option if a composite manager is running. i guess you were confused by the faq on get-e. which imho uses too many terms that probably only developers understand...
