you are seeing x's multihead. that's multiple independent screens where the only thing that can move between them is the mouse. x doesn't allow windows to cross between screens in multihead. what you want is xinerama. drivers from nvidia and ati both provide this (twinview and mergedfb for example). and then you can drag windows in-between.
