Nope, I'm on an old Slackware Linux system with the automake and autoconf mods as described below.

I tried building from CVS tonight (05.02.2006) and got the same AC_DEFINE error. Others aren't having this problem so I'm confused as to what is unique about our systems. :)

I'm getting the exact same problem.  I had an older autoconf/automake
installed in /usr and I installed autoconf 2.59 and automake 1.9.6 in /usr,
presumably clobbering the older installation.

The strange thing is, epsilon from CVS has the problem but Epsilon from the
snapshot at FreeDesktop.org builds fine:
