I switched from Bytecode to Automatic and it looks better. Characters in the WM look sharp and clean, but fonts in, say, Firefox look fuzzy and/or inconsistantly shaded. I'm using freetype with BCI and truetype fonts (Times New Roman, Veranda, Tahoma from the Web Fonts package). In the Gnome DE I think I can turn off anti aliasing but keep the BCI hinting and it looks much better (in the WM _and_ in apps). I am completely willing to belive that I have poor taste in font rendering, but I do know that I much prefer clean hard edged fonts on an LCD to fuzzy ones.
Is there a way to turn off anti aliasing at compile/link time but keep BCI hinting? Is there something I can #ifdef out in the code?
