you're right, they're usually meaningless. as a developer, you'd think i would've known better than to phrase it that way! ;) all i was really after was "are we closer to the finish than we are to the start, and are we 'a little closer' or 'a lot closer'?".
release, etc. etc. - then release an RC1, and more RC's as needed then a final 
0.17.0 - then it's time to sit back and watch the flames :)
i'll bring the marshmallows... someone else can bring the wieners... NO BEANS! ;)
