That might be partially the fault of install scripts, there are at
least three that I have heard of.  They all install from cvs.  Maybe
they should have a configurable option to install from the tarballs,
and default to tarball istall.

USE_CVS=0   # Set to 1 to use a highly unstable cvs version that will
make you go bald and grey.
