OK then.
xrender used to be *much* *MUCH* faster than software on my system. I've
been testing all the release candidates of xorg, and up until now, using
the xrender engine had reduced the combined CPU usage of enlightenment
and X by about 50% ( enlightenment dropped to almost nothing, X
increased a little ). The rain module, in particular, was unusable with
the software engine, but perfectly OK with the xrender engine. The
animated backgrounds also were accelerated nicely.
Unfortunately something's happened quite recently, and now the xrender
engine is a fraction faster than the software engine - maybe by 5%.
Someone else in the xorg mailing list ( see post on 25/12/05 ) has
noticed the same drop in performance in EXA drivers ( also with a Radeon
Mobility ) going from the release candidates to the final release. I've
also watched with dismay as xcompmgr went from being pretty damned
amazing ( with a small number of windows open ) to being pathetically
slow ( also with a small number of windows open ). Hopefully it's a
temporary glitch ...
I'm runing a 1Ghz Apple Powerbook ( TiBook ), with an ATI Radeon
Mobility 9000. I'm using X's new EXA drivers:
(II) Module exa: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.0.0, module version = 1.2.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.8
