Seconded!  I just upgraded a RH9 system to FC4, and automake and autoconf are now screwy as all hell on my box.  (Yeah, I know, shoulda done a fresh install.  Couldn’t.  Replaced near-death hardware, and didn’t have the luxury.)  Being able to avoid that step, and just run configure (which seems to work just fine as an M.O. for almost everything else out there in source form) would make life lots easier.

This does raise a point for the get-e.org team though - perhaps all modules hosted at get-e should be distributed with configure files so that users without autotools (or broken ones :-)) can install the software easier (like evolume seems to be). I think the EFL and enlightenment tarballs at enlightenment.freedesktop.org also come with user friendly configure scripts.
