way, meaning moving the mouse up/down/left/right, and its still good to
know where you are

after each such desktop change.

one reason would be to re-orient (because you may have forgot where you
were), another is to get a feeling how close you are to the edge of the
"world".

I know the pager can be used for that, but the pager is sometimes hidden
under a maximized window, and the popup window isn't.

in fact, both modules are very closely related, I think the feature of
the popup windows with the desktop name can might as well be a part of
the pager (Along with setting a name for a desktop, again in a spatial
way (right click in the desktop, than rename, for example).
