I had the same problem (cf. this very list, about the 20th of June).

It turned out to be a problem with that very Makefile.am. Both the one
in engrave's top level directory, and the one in engrave/src/bin have
AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS set to 1.5 at the beginning, and my Debian system only
has 1.4 or 1.6 and above available.

An easy fix was to just change that line to read 1.6, then point
Debian's alternative (cf. update-alternatives) for automake to 1.6...
