I think that edge flipping of desktops is one of Enlightenment's best features; don't be too quick to dismiss it. It probably does work better with a trackball than with a traditional mouse or other pointing device with a limited range of movement. You have to get used to the fact that it sometimes switches when you do not want it to. You just back up in whatever direction you were going.

I use multiple desktops extensively and never use the pager to switch between them. I also do not have the icon box (E16) on the screen since I never minimize an application. I always switch to another desktop to open another application.

I have used the LiteStep shell on Windows for years because it gives me multiple desktops with edge switching. I came to love those features back when Enlightenment was the window manager for GNOME, around Red Hat 5.2.
