That reminds me of a problem i had not too long ago...
An update to libpng had been released to fix a security issue where a
malicious png file could cause the program loading it to execute
arbitrary code. The fix appeared in libpng-1.2.6rc1, if i remember
correctly. Up until this point i had been using 1.2.5, which
contained the bug. I upgraded to the new version as soon as i saw the
announcement, but in doing so broke E. E wouldn't even start, it just
have me an error dialog box on the default grey X background with
options something like ignore/quit E/cancel (none of which did
anything by the way).
I switched back to libpng-1.2.5... (i had to use lynx to get to the
sourceforge download site for the libpng sources - no other window
managers installed, and X without a window manager is, well, clunky :)
Some time later (a week?) libpng-1.2.6 was properly released and i
carefully tried again. This time E was able to start up without
problems.
So, maybe if you upgrade libpng to the latest version, then try
compiling imlib again, you'll have better luck? Just an idea...
