So I now have switched to xorg.. The only difference I can see is that mplayer's default output (x11/xv?) crashes, I have to specify "-vo x11". I haven't made transparency work yet*, I think that the transparencyising bit (composite manager?) may be a separate thing entirely, but I'm no expert in the lower levels of X... But yeah, other than mplayer not working, there's no obvious visible difference.

* Basically I just uninstalled xfree, installed xorg, copied my configs across, and tried "eesh -e 'wop <window id> op[acity] <0-255>'" as was pointed out in another thread - nothing happened :(
