I believe gnome/mandrake has this already (At least last time I installed a
mandrake install for my friend, which was ages ago, this appeared to already
happen.) You insert the cd and the CD-ROM icon is automounted on your desktop. 
I believe that Knoppix does much the same, if I recall correctly.  I could be
way off :)  Brain no workie anymore.
