OK, I did experiment some more, and I discovered the following:
- when I run xplanet, it does work indeed _on the first desktop_ (I was
  trying to launch it on another desktop, and it does not show there);
- if I start it on the first desktop, move to another desktop then come
  back, xplanet is not there anymore, even though it is still running.
  For instance, I launch xplanet when I'm on desktop 3. I go to desktop
  1, it is there (in fact I see the switch from the old bg to xplanet).
  If I switch desktops again and come back to desktop 1, I see the old
  bg instead of xplanet.

So let me rephrase my question: is it possible to have xplanet run with
several desktops?

Thanks a lot,
