Hit the 'Context Menu' key, or whatever it's called (between Control & the windoze key on the right). This brings up the e17 main menu under the mouse, wherever you are. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Left/Right to switch virtual desktops, or just roll your mouse off the edge of one of your desktops
You might also like to look at the 'blue-eyed' theme for e17, available from www.get-e.org for a theme that is very compact and shiny.
