With the increasing popularity of using headsets with computer sound output
there is a vast surplus of sound systems built for computers, that were
usually packaged with the computer, that are gathering dust in garages
everywhere.
I've got so many lying around I usually haul them to the local Ham club
meetings to give away. The sound quality ranges from poor to truly
remarkable.Some
are speakers only that rely on the output of the sound card for volume and
some come equipped with built in amps and a wall wart or power plug. I tried
about 10 of them on my K2 and had results that were all positive and most
sounded very good.
No modification was needed to use any of them. I tried them on my FT 100
which has severe sound quality problems with the built in speaker. I have been
using a 3 Inch "LCS-80M" in a plastic box (made in China) with the FT-100 and
had good sounding audio for years. I use it primarily for when IO want to use
the GC AM frequencies.

To summarize - lots of good cheap or free stuff out there if you want it.
