My shack is wired with the following: 1x 120 VAV 15 amp 1x 120 VAC 20 amp 1x 240 VAC 20 amp
I run the K3 and my radio equipment on the 120 VAC 20 amp circuit and the AL-80B amplifier on the 240 VAC 20 amp circuit. I run my computer and other stuff on the household 120 VAC 15 amp circuit. I downsized from my antenna farm, and I had a license electrician wire a bedroom (radio room now) with the 120 / 240 VAC 20 amp outlets. 73 to all, Dave Tulloss K7DRT Tucson, Az. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Jim Brown Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2025 12:53 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 for sale On 5/31/2025 11:33 AM, Bob McGraw wrote: > However, should the amp be powered from residential electrical outlets > where there are usually 4 or 5 on the same circuit and using the > stab-in connections, the 120V voltage drop may be excessive under full load. > The amp should not display the HV to be less than 60 volts at 500 > watts output. Bob's advice is right on! It's simple Ohm's law to run beefy copper for circuits that will run big loads. My shack is wired with two #10 120V/20A circuits and a single 240V/20A circuit. The KPA500 HV transformer is tapped to adjust for these issues. It's quite simple to adjust -- open the top cover and change a push-on jumper, per the manual. For almost ten years, we've run two KPA500s from one or two Honda 2000i or 2200i generators. For CW, we need to back off the power to 300-350W to run from a single gen, but can run full power from two of the generators sychronized together with the Honda kit. If one of the stations is SSB, we can run close to full power from one generator. They're running on 120VAC. We DO run beefy copper from the generator(s) to the amps. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [email protected] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [email protected]
