Yaar, Bhai loag!

Please!! Kaam kya hai?!

Unless your problem is of a nature that you don't want to discuss
on the list [in which case, you can write to me directly],
please! please!! please!!! This is the second time this month
I have seen a mail from an NEDian saying "Is there anyone at
xxxx? Please contact me via e-mail." Of course there's NEDians
that know a *lot* about San Jose State University! It's in the
middle of Silicon Valley. And even if it wasn't [like the other
university someone mentioned last week], there is most probably
some NEDian on God's blessed earth that can help you. I live
half a mile from SJSU. Several of my class- and batchmates got
their Masters' from it. If you need some help with it, we can
most probably help you. But if you write such a vague and curt
mail, I might not pay attention. If I pay attention, I might not
forward it to one of my ex-SJSU friends. If I do, they might not
get round to writing to you. HOWEVER, if you wrote "I have
gotten admission into such and such University, I! h! ! ave
having problems with getting my I20 shipped to me [for example],
can someone please help?" I might just pick up the phone ask the
admission office what the issue is and then [like I have done for
several people] maybe even have the I20 shipped to you by courier
[just for example].

So, please brothers and sisters, be direct, to-the-point, and as
respectful and relaxed as possible. I might have [as I have
today] written back; others might be too busy to follow up such a
vague lead. Also, you are talking to your fellow NEDians --
mostly your seniors -- so be relaxed and respectful. Coldness
and curtness will not get you as far as being friendly and
respectful will.

My apologies if I am sounding like an old, ornery person. I just
wanted to give some blunt useful advice. And please don't be
distracted by my references to SJSU, the e-mail I am replying to,
or I20s. I am trying to make a general point.

BTW, Asim, kaam kya hai?

Sabahat.
