i finally found the problem with my 280c that wouldn't run off of 
batteries.  in the course of taking it apart a number of times the 
previous owner had failed to replace the screws on the battery 
contact.  one of those screws provides grounding to the battery 
terminal, and the service manual points out that if it is not 
reinstalled problems may ensue.  i popped the case screws in there 
and sure enough it works fine.  remember the curse of the missing 
battery contact screw!!  bob
