Hello. I have been success on VMWare 5.5.2 + official linux-2.6.33. modetest -s 4...@6:800x600 works well.
But I have to add : drmModeDirtryFB(fd, fb_id, NULL, 0) after drmModeSetCrtc line. The color squares are displayed, but in dmesg i still have WARN_ON(vmw_framebuffer_dmabuf_pin). So it is moving the right way.
