Strange enough: Using UXA instead of EXA glxgears also drops this message about failure in getting fences, but somehow starts, although it freezes soon. Big downside is: Using UXA for some reason the xserver seems to eat up a huge lot of cpu power and constantly keeps the harddisk busy, pretty much unusable...
